Coach James Nervins Biography

James Nervins, a Houston native and Madisonville High School graduate, has dedicated over 20 years to developing student-athletes through basketball and education. An All-District player in high school, James has built a lifelong passion for athletics, leadership, and player development.

James earned a B.A. in Psychology from Texas Southern University and an M.A. in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University. With 21 years of coaching experience, he has mentored middle and high school athletes through school programs and AAU basketball.

James began coaching in 2004 with the City of Dallas before joining The Oakridge School as a middle school coach and varsity assistant. His career later took him to Houston and Phoenix, where he spent eight years coaching high school and AAU girls basketball.

James returned to Texas in 2016 to support his mother while continuing his coaching career at Guyer, Irving MacArthur, and Denton High School. Since 2025, Coach Nervis has served as the Assistant Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Denton Ryan High School.

Coach Nervins views sports as a ministry, using basketball, mentorship, and faith to develop character and positively impact young athletes. He is also an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Off the court, James enjoys time with his wife, LaTrice, and their four children. His life and coaching reflect a commitment to family, leadership, service, and faith.
